Utah company pays $1 million to Kansas for misuse of data

A Utah company has agreed to pay the state of Kansas $1 million for misusing personal information from motor vehicle records, according to the Attorney General's office.

The company, The Recall Center, purchased vehicle registration information from the state for use in notifying consumers of recalls on their vehicles and helping them pursue claims.

However, the company illegally sold the information to third parties, Attorney General Steven Six said in a statement.
