President Obama signed a bill Wednesday to fund the Department of Homeland Security through Sept. 30, a day after House Speaker John Boehner abandoned House Republican efforts to protest Obama’s immigration policies.
Obama signed the bill in the Oval Office, telling photographers capturing the scene that he wanted to thank Congress for a bill “that’ll ensure that we can continue to fund the extraordinary work of our men and women at the Department of Homeland Security.
“They keep us safe every single day,” Obama said of the DHS employees. “And we want to make sure that they’ve got the resources and support that they need to do the job.“
Republicans had hoped to block Obama’s executive actions late last year on immigration which would shield more than four million immigrants from deportation. The executive order has been stayed by a federal judge in Texas, who issued a temporary injunction.
