The White House announced Tuesday that 11.4 million Americans either selected a health plan or re-enrolled in coverage using the nation's health insurance marketplaces as of midnight Feb. 15.
Most of the newly enrolled – 8.6 million – lived in the 37 states that use the federal HealthCare.gov platform. Roughly 2.8 million lived in other states that operate their own marketplaces.
In a repeat from last year, more than a million people selected plans in the final nine days of open enrollment, with a record number of Americans signing up for coverage on Feb. 15, the final day of open enrollment for 2015 coverage.
The actual number of sign-ups will grow even larger since the Obama administration has extended the enrollment period through Sunday, Feb. 22 for people who were “in line,” but unable to select a plan before midnight on Feb. 15.
