- More than seven million Americans have now enrolled in private health coverage on the nation's health insurance marketplaces, thanks to an eleventh-hour surge of signups on Tuesday that pushed the final enrollment tally beyond the original Congressional Budget Office goal.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that 7.04 million people had purchased coverage in an afternoon briefing at the White House on Tuesday.
"I think it's fair to say we surpassed everyone's expectations,” Carney told reporters. “Americans made it clear they wanted this product."
President Barack Obama will formally announce the latest Affordable Care Act milestone in a Rose Garden ceremony later this afternoon.
