Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is pre-emptively planning to cut 200 staff jobs in the next five years for a savings of $1 billion. "Every dollar that we save by reducing the size of our headquarters and back-office operations is a dollar that can be invested in war-fighting capabilities and readiness," said Hagel.
Congressional negotiators are working on a proposed budget to avert another government shutdown in January. At the moment, the group is considering discretionary spending of $1 trillion -- an amount squarely between what Republicans and Democrats want.
