Storm hunters plotting path of Hurricane Irene

BILOXI — The Hurricane Hunters are tracking Hurricane Irene, whose current path will skirt her past the east coast of Florida and away from the Mississippi Coast.

The National Hurricane Center forecast calls for Irene -- already at Category 2 storm -- to become a Category 3 by Thursday. Computer models continue to lessen the threat to South Florida but increases the likelihood for landfall in the Carolinas. The cone of probability puts possible landfill near Charleston and the border of North Carolina and South Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

Headquartered at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, the Hurricane Hunters this week flew out of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, where the eye of the tropical storm passed over the island. They will return to Biloxi in a few days as Irene moves north, said Maj. Heather Newcomb, chief of public affairs for the 403rd Wing.
