Four people were killed and more than 50 injured Tuesday morning when a Charlotte-based bus traveling to New York City overturned on Interstate 95 north of Richmond, the Virginia State Police said.

Police say driver fatigue caused the crash.

The bus was operating for Sky Express, which provides overnight transportation from East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte to New York City's Chinatown community.

The company has encountered a number of problems with federal officials on driver safety, according to a check of inspections.

Corinne Geller, of the Virginia State Police, say the bus overturned shortly before 5 a.m. on northbound I-95 at mile marker 103, about a quarter-mile south of Exit 104 in Caroline County. That is between Richmond and Fredericksburg.

Geller said the bus went off the road and overturned, landing on its roof. According to reports from the scene, the driver went off the road, over-corrected, and the bus flipped.
