Dozens of people objecting to conservative talk-radio programming -- and some people who support it -- gathered Tuesday night in central Fresno for a vigil in front of radio station KMJ (AM 580).
Fresno County Democratic Party officials, who organized the vigil, said the conservative talk-radio programming like what KMJ broadcasts has created a "climate of hate" that incites the kind of violence that occurred Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. Six people were killed and 14 others were injured when a gunman began firing at Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during a meet-the-constituents event at a shopping center.
KMJ officials denounced the shooting -- and the protest.
In a written statement, KMJ Senior Vice President/General Manager Patty Hixson said the Fresno County Democratic Party's attempt to connect the tragedy to KMJ "is irresponsible, inaccurate, and an insult to our staff and the listeners we serve. ..."
