A boat ride past the mansions, docks and hotels on the Intracoastal Waterway will take longer next year under the first overhaul of manatee-protection zones in Broward County in 17 years.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission next month will vote on a series of speed-zone changes to Broward waterways designed to update manatee protection for an era of more boats, more manatees and improved scientific knowledge of the endangered marine mammal's habits.
The rules could lengthen the time it takes to reach the ocean for Broward's huge boating community that includes weekend fishing enthusiasts, yacht owners with boats in the county's many marinas, tourists and superyacht owners who bring their boats to a county known around the world for its yacht-servicing industries.
