A report on Fort Worth's growing natural gas pipeline system warned that regulatory loopholes could cause problems as companies build more pipelines in urban communities, but also commended state and city measures governing the lines.
Fort Worth is in the midst of a pipeline building boom because of drilling in the Barnett Shale natural gas field. Texas already has the largest gas pipeline network in the country
Carl Weimer, executive director of the Pipeline Safety Trust, and Richard Kuprewicz, a pipeline engineer and consultant spent months researching records from local entities, the Texas Railroad Commission and federal agencies to document the pros and cons of the area's pipeline system. They recommend that the Railroad Commission allow cities to adopt stricter pipeline safety standards in certain cases.
