Calif. air board votes for 33 percent renewables

The state approved sweeping new rules Thursday requiring California utilities to obtain a third of their energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar power.

Air Resources Board members voted unanimously to implement the new 33 percent renewable electricity standard.

The vote comes as California residents are poised to vote on a ballot initiative seeking to roll back the state's landmark climate change law, which authorizes the rules for the renewable standard
