Nobody knows how long the alligator has been stuck in a drain at Indigo Run Plantation on Hilton Head Island.
It's been at least a month since a landscaper noticed the 11-foot alligator wedged in the vertical pipe. It's been half a week since Critter Management president Joe Maffo began his effort to get the behemoth out of the hole.
The alligator crawled into the pipe through one of the plantation's lagoons, which serve as a drainage system, Maffo said. It couldn't turn around after it crawled into the narrow space.
Maffo says the cold weather and the lack of food won't hurt the creature, which can survive for years without sustenance.
