Journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who were imprisoned in North Korea for more than four months before being released in early August, destroyed videotapes and swallowed notes to keep their sources from being identified, they wrote in a joint statement Tuesday on www.current.com.
The pair thanked supporters in a short video and released a lengthy description of the events leading up to their arrest March 17.
Ling grew up in Carmichael and graduated from Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks.
The two were reporting on the trafficking of North Koreans into China for San Francisco-based Current TV. They followed their Korean-Chinese guide across the frozen Tumen River, where smugglers pay North Korean guards, the statement said.
