Fisherman sets record by catching 1,062-pound marlin

Bob Farris' big fish story captured a record.

The part-time North Myrtle Beach resident caught a blue marlin Wednesday that weighed 1,062 pounds during the 36th annual White Marlin Open Fishing Tournament in Ocean City, Md. The fish set a new state record and landed Farris $555,000 in prize money in the tournament that has more than $2 million in prizes and nearly 300 boats registered.

"It was quite a fish," Farris said via telephone Thursday from Maryland. "We knew it was a big fish, but really, I had no idea it was over 1,000 pounds."

Farris was on the boat No Problem, owned by Mark Becker, out of North Myrtle Beach, and he credited the crew with helping land the record catch, which surpassed Maryland's previous blue marlin record by 100 pounds.
