Man gets $7.3 million judgment for cell phone defamation

A judge in Jackson County, Missouri, awarded $7.3 million in damages Tuesday to a New York man in his defamation case against a Johnson County housewife.

Lewis Heacker, 23, sued Jessica Wright, 48, of Leawood in 2007. In the suit, he said that he began working in her home as a baby sitter when he was 13 years old and living in Kansas City.

In his suit, Heacker contended that Wright accessed his cell phone account in 2005, after they had a falling-out, and began sending "profane and defamatory" text messages to his friends and family members.

The court's multimillion-dollar judgment came on claims of breach of a confidential relationship, negligent infliction of emotional distress, invasion of privacy, and making an injurious falsehood, among others.
