Two people have died in wind-whipped wildfires that erupted Thursday in North Texas, charring the thousands of acres and destroying property in numerous counties, officials said.
The deaths were reported in Montague County, but details were unavailable, said Lewis Kearney, spokesman for the Texas Forest Service.
WFAA-TV Channel 8 reported that Matt Quinn, a former reporter for the station, died with his wife, Cathy, when flames covered their property in Montague County. The station said a family member confirmed the Quinns' deaths.
Cathy Quinn's son, Chris, was being treated Friday at the Parkland Memorial Hospital burn unit in Dallas, WFAA reported. The station reported that hospital officials said he was in fair condition.
There were earlier reports of a third person killed in a Wichita County traffic wreck that was caused by smoke in the air.
That fatality actually happened near the Cement Mountain fire, which straddled Young and Jack Counties, but a highway patrol trooper said that smoke was no factor in the fatal wreck.
