Troopers kill Alaska hospital shooter; 1 victim is dead

A man who stormed into Central Peninsula Hospital outside of Anchorage this morning was shot and killed by Alaska State Troopers, and one of his victims has also died.

Joseph Marchetti was shot during a standoff in the hospital parking lot. He was pronounced dead in the hospital's emergency department, hospital spokeswoman Bonnie Nichols said.

She said one of Marchetti's victims, Mike Webb, died shortly before noon. A second victim, Margaret Stroup, is in surgery and in critical condition, Nichols said.

Marchetti, a recently discharged employee, entered the hospital shortly before 10 a.m. armed with a rifle and a handgun and opened fire, according to troopers.

Nichols said the victims were Marchetti's former supervisors.

She said Marchetti had only recently left the hospital's employ.

"I believe he got his last check yesterday," she said. "It was extremely frightening. He was shooting up walls. People were in lockdown and very frightened."
