Florida teen sentenced to life in prison for killing classmate

Michael Hernandez, the teen convicted of murdering classmate Jaime Gough in a middle school bathroom, was sentenced on Friday afternoon to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Circuit Judge John Schlesinger also sentenced Hernandez to 30 years in prison for the attempted murder of another classmate.

Hernandez, now 18, was convicted in September of murdering Gough. His attorneys argued he was insane at the time of the slaying and believed his destiny was to become a serial killer. But prosecutors, while acknowledging he had mental problems, argued that he didn't meet the legal definition of insanity.

Hernandez confessed to slashing Gough's throat and stabbing the boy repeatedly to make sure he was dead. He said he lured Gough into the bathroom specifically to kill him. Both boys were 14 at the time.
