Many local thrift shops are facing shortages of goods because sales increase and donations decrease during difficult economic times.
Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina, which operates 15 retail centers, has a critical need for donated clothing, said Jennifer Oldal, marketing manager for Goodwill. She also said the centers have seen donations of all types of goods slide.
"Donations are down for the summer," she said. "Donations are down across the board."
At the Beaufort store, donations dropped by 10 percent in August, compared with a year ago. The Hilton Head Island store saw a slight increase in August after a concerted effort to reach out to neighborhoods. July donations, however, were down 13 percent over the same month last year, according to Oldal.
At the same time, sales are up 26 percent over last year throughout lower South Carolina, leading to the critical need for clothing, among other things, Oldal said.
