Alaska's volcano ash strands thousands of travelers

Volcanic ash stranded more than 6,000 travelers Sunday night and early today when a shift in the wind moved a giant ash plume into flight routes.

Alaska Airlines cancelled 44 flights into and out of Alaska, and other airlines canceled some flights as well.

Alaska has added flights today to try to accommodate the stranded passengers, according to Caroline Boren, Alaska Airlines spokeswoman.

Representatives of Continental, Delta and United Airlines said some flights had been canceled Sunday and early this morning, but all airlines were flying with normal schedules today.

A database of departures and arrivals at the Anchorage airport showed nearly all flights this morning coming and going as scheduled, although a United flight to Chicago scheduled to take off at 7:10 a.m. was canceled.
