FORT WORTH — Lidia Perez’s "little yard sale" last weekend was supposed to raise some money to help John Martinek rebuild his home and life.
It did more than that.
More than $40,000 was donated by thousands of North Texans, from 80-year-old retirees to second-graders, who were moved by the story of the World War II veteran and Perez, his neighbor, virtually guaranteeing that Martinek will be in a new home fairly soon.
"It’s hard to believe," Martinek, 88, said.
In fact, so unbelievable and so unexpected was the outpouring of help that Martinek and Perez are left wondering how exactly to proceed.
