In tough times, cobbler tries to save soles

A well-worn economic theory goes like this: When times really get tough, they're kicking up their heels at the shoe repair shop.

It's true.

While other local businesses are scuffing along these days, Hilton Head Shoe Repair on Otter Hole Road is flipping into new gears.

Owner Gary Flowers recently took on part-time help from Chris O'Nan, better known as a musician and husband of Hilton Head Island High School Principal Amanda O'Nan.

They're hammering away at 250 pairs of shoes waiting to be fixed.
