Fresno airport puts sun to work

Under sunny skies and the roar of incoming planes, government and solar industry officials gathered Wednesday to note the opening of Fresno Yosemite International Airport's new solar power system.

The array of solar panels covering 9.5 acres southeast of the airport will generate 4.2 megawatts of electricity per year, making it the biggest solar power system at any airport in the country, said Russ Widmar, the airport's aviation director.

And while the project cost about $16 million, "We got this all for free," Widmar said.
