Fire containment is advancing in California, even while blazes continue to char the state.
Officials say 96 fires are burning, a fraction of the more than 2,000 that have challenged firefighters and resources in the state this spring and summer. A total of 866,184 acres have been burned, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection information updated today.
The fires have destroyed 100 homes, one commercial building and 128 outbuildings. More than 7,600 homes remain threatened.
The American Red Cross has opened a service center to aid people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the fires.
Firefighters are gaining the advantage against many fires, though.
