Florida Utility's Smart Meters Show Electricity Use by the Hour

Florida Power & Light has begun deploying another 50,000 ''smart meters'' in Broward County to help customers monitor their electricity usage, the utility announced Tuesday.

The meters, which will be put in service next month, will allow customers to go online to monitor in real time how much electricity they are using -- by the month, week, day or hour.

One example: A customer could run an air conditioning at 77 degrees for three hours, see how much power he or she is using and then reset to, say, 74 degrees, to see the difference.
