ANCHORAGE -- Other than a few pictures, Tanya Slim has no memory of her father. He died in a horrific boating accident off the Bering Sea coast when she was just 10 months old.
But what Slim knows of the man who brought her into the world has carried her hundreds of miles from her village of Kipnuk to Anchorage for this week's Native Youth Olympics at Sullivan Arena.
"He was an athlete," Slim said, trying to hold back tears Friday afternoon while awaiting her turn to compete in the two-foot high kick. "That's how I know that I am just like him."
