The 71-year-old retired engineer, who has been undergoing dialysis three times a week for complications from diabetes, will undergo transplant surgery tomorrow at the Medical University of South Carolina. His kidney donor is a 50-year-old father of five from Alabama, a retired Army first sergeant, whom he met online through MatchingDonors.com - where more than 729 people viewed his profile.
Since 2004, the site has facilitated 71 kidney donor transplants between strangers. Forty other transplants, including two livers, are pending. Transplant candidates put their profiles on the site where potential donors "meet" those they choose to help.
