Rush on for permits as S.C. city approves Sunday beer sales

Chuck Ash, manager of the Bi-Lo on Devine Street, drove to the store’s corporate office in Mauldin at 5 a.m. Friday to get the paperwork for a Sunday beer and wine application.

His store was the first of several retailers in Columbia to get the go-ahead Friday from the S.C. Department of Revenue to sell beer and wine through Sunday, starting this weekend.

On Tuesday, 70 percent of Columbia voters approved Sunday sales, giving city convenience stores, supermarkets and other retailers the right to sell beer and wine 24 hours a day, all week.
