American Airlines cancels 200 flights for inspections

American Airlines canceled 200 flights Wednesday to conduct re-inspections of its MD-80 airplanes, a type of plane that's widely used at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

About 60 of the canceled flights are at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, said airline spokesman Tim Wagner. Another 46 are at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, and the rest are spread around American’s system.

The inspections are focused on wiring within the aircraft’s wheel well, Wagner said. A federal rule requires that the wires, which are bundled together in a sleeve, be tied to the well’s side every inch. In some planes, inspectors found that the ties are spaced at longer intervals.
