Two weeks ago, Morgan Brown won the Northwest Missouri Regional Spelling Bee, and te 12-year-old is still riding high off that win, eagerly anticipating her May trip to Washington and the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee finals.
But Morgan, it turns out, is ineligible for the big dance, the victim of a paperwork problem. Her parents are afraid to tell her.
Paige Kimble, director of the national bee, said her hands are tied. Morgan’s school was not properly enrolled for bee eligibility. To bend the rules for Morgan would be unfair to the other kids, Kimble said.
