Suicide notes left by a Hilton Head businessman under suspicion in the disappearance of a wealthy island couple acknowledge that he had skimmed money from the couple’s businesses, a law enforcement source told The State. But the notes left by Dennis Gerwing do not say he is responsible for the disappearance of John and Elizabeth Calvert, according to two sources, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity.
The couple vanished last week after meeting with Gerwing, 54, to confront him about financial discrepancies, investigators said.
Investigators suspect the couple has been killed, but have found no physical evidence, one source said. Aerial searches are planned today.
