Hilton Head exec in missing couple case slashed thigh to kill self

Dennis Gerwing had been dead for 10 hours by the time authorities publicly named him a person of interest in the disappearance of John and Elizabeth Calvert, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said Thursday.

Gerwing, chief financial officer of The Club Group, a company that manages a variety of properties on Hilton Head Island, was found dead Tuesday in the upstairs bathroom of a villa in Swallowtail, a Sea Pines timeshare complex located directly across the street from his office in Sea Pines Center. Results of an autopsy found that he slashed his inner thigh with a knife at around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Tanner said investigators have to consider a “worst-case scenario” relating to the Calverts’ disappearance, but that they are still classified as missing. Air, canine and dive searches are continuing, he said.
