Now living in a displaced persons' camp in Kericho in western Kenya, Robert Ooko said that economic issues, not tribal hatreds, are responsible for the unrest. "The locals have been threatened" by outside groups buying up land, Ooko said.

Paul Okema, 56, fled his home in Kericho, Kenya, after a mob set fire to a kiosk where he sold soap, phone cards and other sundries. Okema, originally from the neighboring Kisii district, believes he was targeted by local youths because he had work and they didn't.
