In a big win for Boeing and Washington state’s aerospace workers, the World Trade Organization on Thursday ruled that the European Union provided $22 billion in illegal subsidies to Airbus.
U.S Trade Representative Michael Froman declared the ruling a “sweeping victory.”
And Washington state Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell said it should help Boeing “win more sales around the world.”
“This is the largest trade ruling from WTO in history - and they have sided with U.S. manufacturers,” Cantwell said.

The WTO said the illegal subsidized financing came from the EU and four of its members: Germany, France, the UK and Spain, causing tens of billions of dollars in lost U.S. exports.

“We will not tolerate our trading partners ignoring the rules at the expense of American workers and their families,” Froman said.
Republican Rep. Dave Reichert of Washington state, who heads the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, said the ruling is “a huge victory for the United States and the over 260,000 workers employed by the aerospace industry in my home state of Washington.”
