The arguments supporting same-sex marriage are now piling up at the Supreme Court, with the filing Friday of the first round of substantive briefs.
In sometimes stirring language, advocates used the opening briefs to argue state bans on same-sex marriage, and on recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states, violate the Constitution.
“From the start of the marriage to the birth of children to the death of one spouse and beyond, Ohio erases the legal relationships of (same-sex married) families,” stated one brief, led by attorney Alphonse A. Gerhardstein and joined by multiple organizations.
In a rare move, underscoring the cases’ importance, the Supreme Court’s public information office is posting the briefs in a prominent spot on the court’s website.
The briefs from the states defending their marriage restrictions are to be filed on or before 2 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2015. The reply briefs are to be filed on or before 2 p.m., Friday, April 17. Oral argument will be held in April.
