One day before the 9/11 anniversary, a 19-year-old Colorado woman on Wednesday pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Shannon Conley, of Arvada, Colo., pleaded guilty in Denver before U.S. District Court Judge Raymond P. Moore. According to her plea agreement, she worked with a co-conspirator named Yousr Mouelhi between February 2014 and early April 2014 to provide support to Al-Qaeda and the more recently infamous Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Conley met Mouelhi on the Internet, according to the Justice Department. During their communications, they shared their view of Islam as requiring participation in violent jihad. According to prosecutors:
“Conley joined the U.S. Army Explorers (USAE) to be trained in U.S. military tactics and in firearms. She traveled to Texas and attended the USAE training. She also obtained first aid/nursing certification and National Rifle Association certification.”
A Muslim convert, Conley had been arrested while trying to board a plane for the Middle East at Denver International Airport.
Conley faces up to five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 when she is sentenced in January.
