Two Florida judges and an attorney in private practice should be promoted to the federal bench, President Barack Obama said Wednesday.
In a Sunshine State flurry, Obama announced his intention to nominate state Circuit Judge Beth Bloom and state Circuit Judge Darrin P. Gayles to U.S. District Court seats in the Southern District of Florida. Another state judge, Circuit Judge Carlos Eduardo Mendoza, will be nominated to a federal seat in the Middle District of Florida.
Obama also announced plans to nominate attorney Paul G. Byron, a former federal prosecutor, to a district court seat in the Middle District of Florida.
White House officials note that Gayles, if confirmed, would be the first-ever openly gay male African-American federal judge.
