The number of U.S. executions dropped to 39 this year, marking only the second time in two decades that the number has fallen below 40, according to a new report from the Death Penalty Information Center.
The year-end report notes the contrast from 1999, when 98 individuals were executed in the United States. In a similar trendline, the number of death sentences imposed this year fell to 80, compared to 315 in 1994 and 1996.
Texas leads all others in imposing the death penalty, with 16 executions this year.
