The Stanislaus County district attorney's office will seek the death penalty for a former Ceres resident charged with the rape, sexual assault and murder of his 14-year-old daughter.
Prosecutor Annette Rees made that announcement Monday during a pretrial hearing for Mark Edward Mesiti in Superior Court. Rees said her office has filed additional sex abuse charges against Mesiti involving two other girls.
Mesiti, 44, is being held without bail in the Stanislaus County Jail. The criminal complaint alleges that he drugged and sexually assaulted his daughter, Alycia, from July 2005 through May 2006.
Authorities say Mesiti killed his daughter in August 2006 and buried her remains in the back yard of their Ceres home. Her body was unearthed March 25, 2009.
Alycia's father, older brother and her father's girlfriend had moved out of the home by then. Alycia's mother did not live with them.
The criminal complaint identifies the other girls as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. One was 8 years old when she was sexually assaulted, authorities said. The other was 16 and 17 years old when she was assaulted.
