Copper thieves strike in Biloxi, Mississippi

BILOXI — Business owners in Edgewater Village Shopping Center propped open their front doors Monday after arriving to work to find they had no air conditioning.

Late Sunday or early Monday, someone stole the copper wire and pipes from the air-conditioning units behind the 17 businesses. The shopping center is on Edgewater Drive across from Edgewater Mall.

“We’re guesstimating it did $60,000 to $100,000 in damages,” police Sgt. Bennie Hickman said.

Jorge Flores, owner of El Saltillo Mexican Restaurant, was the first to realize the damages. He called police.

“It destroyed a 20-ton unit,” Flores said. “It damaged the whole unit.”
