RALEIGH — DNA evidence can help convict the guilty and exonerate the innocent and should be routinely collected from anyone arrested on felony charges in North Carolina, N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper said this morning.
Copper spoke at a news conference urging state lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow law officers to take a DNA sample from people charged with felonies, regardless of whether they are eventually convicted.
Copper, flanked by Raleigh police Chief Harry Patrick Dolan, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall, Raleigh police Maj. Rick Grayson and rape survivor Meghan Oberzan, noted that 23 other states have passed a similar law.
