It's not like people in Arizona didn't already have enough problems. Now they're being blamed for ripping off California's recycling program of millions of dollars.
California Attorney General Jerry Brown said today that his office has shut down fraud rings based in Arizona and Nevada that have trucked cans and bottles into California to recycle them in California, pulling in $3.5 million in funds from the California Redemption Value program.
Arizona and Nevada do not have CRV programs, and Brown's office said recyclers are illegally bringing out-of-state cans and bottles into California to turn them in, sometimes loading them with sand to increase the weight of the cans and, hence, the value of them.
Brown's office said a total of 31 people have been arrested in the cases.
