Jackson County prosecutors today accused a New Jersey man of breaking down a Kansas City woman's door Tuesday and kidnapping her because he wanted to marry her.
The 25-year-old victim escaped by locking herself in a bathroom stall at a McDonald's restaurant in Fairview Heights Ill.
Prosecutors charged Raul Ortiz-Caseres, 22, of Mount Holly, N.J., with felony kidnapping. His friend who allegedly drove them to Illinois also was charged with kidnapping. Both men remained in jail in Illinois, awaiting extradition proceedings.
Court records said Ortiz and the victim grew up in the same village in Mexico. They both moved to the United States. The victim said Ortiz had been harassing her with phone calls and letters recently, including sending her an engagement ring, even though she told him she was not interested in a romantic relationship.
