GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The son of a minister and gospel-group singer who died Tuesday after a wreck in Scott County said the family does not want to press charges against the person who allegedly ran his father off the road.
Roger "Papa" Barkley Sr., 61, was driving to his house in Stamping Ground Tuesday night from his son Curtis Barkley's home in Georgetown, the son said. According to the Fayette County Coroner's Office, his truck left Long Lick Road and struck a tree about 9:35 p.m.
Barkley was lucid at the scene and said someone had run him off the road and kept driving, Curtis Barkley said. He said the sheriff's office had not found the driver as of Wednesday afternoon.
"Even if we do find who it is, we're not pressing charges," Curtis Barkley said. "We just would like to make sure that they understand that God loves them. And we hope that they know Christ."
Roger Barkley suffered blunt-force trauma and was pronounced dead at University of Kentucky Hospital at 11:54 p.m. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Roger Barkley was head of Barkley Family Ministries. The Barkley Family gospel group has traveled the country for about three decades, Curtis Barkley said. Roger Barkley sang bass and played guitar.
"He's obviously going to be missed," Curtis Barkley said.
