Former Sacramento County sheriff's Lt. Mark W. Kessell was sentenced Tuesday to four years and four months in prison for downloading Internet child pornography.
Both the prosecutor and a probation officer had recommended three years, but U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez said that was not enough punishment to fit what he called "a crime that turns my stomach."
Mendez also was firm in informing both the prosecutor and defense attorney that Kessell's 24 years as a law enforcement officer should not set him apart from any other defendant charged with possessing child pornography.
