In a voice-mail message to a friend Monday night, 17-year-old Conner Troutt calmly explained that he had beaten his mother to death with a baseball bat.
"I actually feel kind of better now," the Joshua teenager said in the message left on the cellphone shared by Darcy Flynn and her boyfriend, Josh Brock.
"He said, 'Thank you for everything you've done for me. I can't take life in jail. I'm going to kill myself. I'm not going to be able to take this,' " Brock said Tuesday afternoon, summarizing Troutt's message. " 'I just want y'all to know. Have a good life. Goodbye.' "
Flynn alerted Johnson County authorities, who said they were already on the case. But Flynn and Brock did not learn until early Tuesday from news reports that their friend’s mother, Donna Troutt, was still alive, albeit in critical condition, at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, and that Conner Troutt was in the Johnson County Jail.
