MIAMI -- The Coral Gables Senior High teen accused in the stabbing death of a classmate last month made a brief court appearance Wednesday morning -- his first as an adult defendant.

Andy Rodriguez, 17, who will be tried on second-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of a classmate, appeared in televised bond court.

Before being denied bond, Rodriguez spoke only once. Asked by the judge if he spoke English, he said: "No.'' A translator took over as the judge ordered anyone related to the case to stay away from the victim's family.

Rodriguez is charged in the death of classmate Juan Carlos Rivera, 17, in a courtyard at the high school on Sept. 15.

On Tuesday, a juvenile judge ruled that Rodriguez will be tried as an adult and he was transferred from juvenile hall to the Turner-Guilford-Knight Correctional Center.
