Guilty: Woman embezzles quarter million, gambles half of it away

A former office manager of Elk Heating and Cooling in Wood River pleaded guilty Wednesday to four fraud offenses after she embezzled about $266,056 from the company and gambled away almost half the money.

Mary R. Storer, 40, of Wood River, pleaded guilty to tax evasion, willful failure to file federal income tax returns, embezzlement from an employee benefit plan and failure to pay employment taxes, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

She faces up to 16 years in prison when she is sentenced Jan 7.

Storer is a heavy gambler and lost over $103,000 at the Alton Belle Casino during 2006," according to the stipulation of fact.

Storer was hired in early 2006, and immediately began embezzling. She was in charge of payroll and filing and paying the company's payroll taxes. She also handled accounts receivable and accounts payable.
