WICHITA — A 28-year-old man faces life in prison after pleading guilty this morning to raping and setting fire to his 10-year-old stepdaughter.
Chris Newberry entered his plea before Sedgwick County District Judge Jeff Goering.
Details of the sexual abuse of the girl became public for the first time, as prosecutor Marc Bennett told the judge about the plea agreement, adding a count of child rape.
Bennett said the 10-year-old had been asleep in a bunk bed with her 4-year-old sister the morning of March 14. Newberry carried the younger girl, one of his biological children, out of the room before he doused the stepdaughter with lighter fluid and set her on fire.
The 10-year-old has told authorities she woke up upon hearing the clicking sound of a lighter, Bennett said.
