Dumb thieves story: Next time, set the brakes on the truck

WICHITA, Kan. — Two thieves tried to pilfer landscaping rock from next to the Keeper of the Plains statue early Wednesday, but their would-be heist sank on them — literally.

Police said the men loaded about a dozen limestone landscaping rocks into a brown Ford Explorer from next to the well-known sculpture in the 600 block of North Seneca at about 1:20 a.m.

But they put so much rock into the company truck they were using that it rolled down the bank and into the Arkansas River.

The two men ran from the area and have not been apprehended, but police said they know the identity of a 45-year-old man who allegedly took part in the caper.
